Cane Ridge Day
June 19 – Cane Ridge and Concord: Sister Churches
When Barton W. Stone was a minister in Bourbon County, Kentucky, in the late 1700s and early 1800s, he served two congregations – Cane Ridge Meeting House near Paris and Concord Meeting House near Carlisle. His farm and cabin were located about midway between the two churches.
Today, Cane Ridge is preserved within a stone super-structure, but Concord is not. However, the site of the Concord Church is delineated by a new plank fence and signage, marking its original location. Across the road from the Concord site is an historic cemetery with graves of early settlers.
This year’s annual Cane Ridge Day focuses on the important relationship of the two congregations and their historic ties to Stone.
The Day begins with registration at 9:30 a.m., followed by introductions and hymn singing, accompanied by Jane Johnson of Lexington playing the pump organ. The first presentation will be given by Cane Ridge Curator James Trader II. It will be titled Barton Stone: Concord and Concordance. The second presentation will focus on Concord’s early commitment to freeing slaves.
Attendees are invited to bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the grounds. The Backroom Bluegrass Band from Crestwood Christian Church, Lexington, will perform in the picnic area. Cold beverages will be available for sale.
The afternoon presentation will be given by Dr. David Alexander of Lexington and titled Memories of Concord.
Offerings for Cane Ridge’s ministry will be received in the morning and afternoon. The Day concludes at 3 p.m.
Cane Ridge Meeting House is located at 1655 Cane Ridge Road (Hwy 537), Paris, KY. For additional information, contact Meeting House staff at (859) 987-5350 or by email at canerdgmtg@aol.com.
